Flexi-Seal® faecal management system (FMS) - Completed

Flexi-Seal® Faecal Management System (FMS) is a closed system for the management of episodic faecal incontinence of liquid and semi-liquid stool. It consists of a silicone catheter which is inserted per rectum and held in place by the inflation of a low pressure balloon which sits in the rectum above the junction of the rectum and anal canal. The distal end of the catheter has a connector that provides a leak proof seal with a collection bag. The collection bag is marked to allow estimation of stool volume to facilitate fluid balance calculations. Once full, the bag can be unclipped and sealed, a fresh bag being applied to the catheter, and the faecal waste disposed in accordance with local policy. The Flexi-Seal FMS is designed for continuous use for up to 29 days.
The Flexi-Seal FMS is innovative because it is designed to greatly reduce the likelihood of contamination of the clinical environment by infected faecal material. The low pressure retention balloon has been shown to be safely tolerated by the rectal mucosa, and the soft silicone catheter allows for adequate drainage of liquid / semi-liquid stool without detriment to the anal sphincter. The collection bag is easily sealed, and has a non return seal which is designed to prevent discharge of the contents even if the bag is inverted prior to being sealed.
